Job Description

MMP Consultancy is seeking a Building Control Team Leader to oversee the Building Control function for a council based in West Sussex. This is a temporary position initially for a period of 3 months subject to extension. The rate of pay will be £500pd depending on the candidates' level of experience.

The successful candidate will manage a small team of Building Inspectors, ensuring compliance with building regulations related to health, safety, sustainability, energy conservation, and design. This is a leadership role requiring both technical expertise and strong team management skills.


Key Responsibilities
* Lead, supervise, and support a team of Registered Building Inspectors to ensure service objectives and performance targets are met.
* Manage the administrative and technical processes of building control, including enforcement actions, to ensure compliance with relevant legislation and building standards.
* Provide training, mentoring, and support to team members, ensuring they maintain professional competence through continuous development.
* Oversee building control applications, ensuring fees are correct, information is compliant, and applications meet building regulations.
* Establish inspection plans, allocate inspections, and monitor compliance and performance across your team.
* Undertake risk assessments on structural calculations and authorise additional checks when necessary.
* Conduct site inspections, assess compliance, negotiate solutions, and, when required, enforce regulations to ensure safety and quality standards.
* Respond to dangerous structures and liaise with emergency services to provide effective solutions, including out-of-hours attendance.
* Represent the Council as a professional witness in legal proceedings and consultations with statutory bodies.
* Provide technical advice to the public, Council departments, and external stakeholders.
* Maintain accurate records using IT systems and manage complaint and dispute resolution processes.


To be considered for this role, you must have:
* Registration as a Building Inspector with the Building Safety Regulator at Class 2A, B, C, D, E, or F.
* Strong managerial and decision-making skills, with relevant experience in building control.
* Comprehensive knowledge of building legislation, regulations, and professional codes of practice.
* Demonstrable knowledge of construction methods, techniques, and materials.
* Financial acumen and an understanding of local government service delivery.
* Excellent communication, leadership, and presentation skills, with a proven ability to manage a team effectively.
* Proficiency in IT, with experience in data input and using relevant office software.
* Desirable Criteria
* Class 4 Technical Manager registration (ideally)
* Membership in a relevant professional body (e.g., RICS, CABE, CIOB) and evidence of continuous professional development (CPD).
* Familiarity with local government services and procedures.
* Willingness to pursue further registration at Class 3G and H as required by the service.
